When we renovated the kitchen family room and dining room we scraped the popcorn off of the ceilings and it was such a mess. In many cases it is best to leave the popcorn to avoid asbestos problems. That sounds dumb but what i mean is that it is a little more difficult to work with big materials and we had to prep the cuts ahead of time but it was much easier and neater than dealing with scraping sanding mudding and. You could go to the trouble of removing all the texture first but a simpler method would be to put furring strips made from 1 3 or 1 4 boards on the ceiling then attach the paneling to them.

I wish we had made that decision about three rooms. This is the old school option. Covering the ceiling with traditional tongue and groove wood planks or beadboard paneling that you can buy through any quality lumber supplier. Fortunately covering it with beadboard allows you to do just that.
